Highlights from a Nov, 5, 2015, NASA briefing on the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN) mission’s findings on the Martian atmosphere. MAVEN has identified the process that appears to have played a key role in the transition of the Martian climate from an early, warm and wet environment that might have supported surface life to the cold, arid planet Mars is today.
The Magnetic Zoom is a terrific science project. You will need a 1-metre long ‘U’ shaped plastic channel, some strong neodymium magnets and a few steel balls. Raise one end of the channel raised by placing it on a matchbox. 30-cm from the raised end of the channel place 2 neodymium magnets and 5 steel balls. The steel balls will obviously stick to the magnets. Then release one ball from the raised end. As soon as this ball strikes the magnets one ball from the extreme right shoots off like a bullet. See the experiment once again.
You can have another arrangement in which instead of one you have two sets of magnets and balls separated by 20-cm. Release one ball from the raised end. As soon as it will strike the magnet the ball at the extreme right will shoot out fast. The two sets of magnets will further increase the speed of the shooting ball.
