After almost eight months my mini tabletop workbench has been an indispensable tool in the shop. During this time I realized I needed some simple but effective improvements to the bench, so I have made these little jigs here.
If you’re new here check out these build videos of the Low Woodworking Bench: Part 1: http://youtu.be/f7vnPPRwjew , Part 2: http://youtu.be/EZPfVSAN_QA
New vise jaws and retractable square dog – Replaced the old pine jaws with thinner mahogany ones and made a 3/8″ (10mm) retractable beech square dog. This change helped increase the vise opening with an extra 3/4″ (20mm)..
Bench dogs – From a 3/4″ (20 mm) round beech dowel and some 3/8″ (10mm) and 3/4″ thick scraps of the same material I made a couple of flat surface or mushroom type bench dogs.
Planing stop – Made from the same materials as above. This simple jig helps planing small pieces of wood by placing it onto two transversal dog holes.
Bench hook for pullsaws – Very useful when cutting miters with a Japanese saw. An indispensable tool that I should have made it from the beginning, as I always drop the saw at the end of the cut and risk to damage it or the objects it hits.
Vise rack stop – When clamping a workpiece on one side of the vise, the opposite side will rack, and will eventually loose or break the vise. This is a simple jig made by stacking a desired number of 1/8″ (or less if I had) shims, all kept by a screw. You just match the jig depth with the workpiece depth and then clamp them one to each side in order to balance the vise’s load.
