China’s first permanent magnet straddle-type monorail train has recently completed a successful test run in the city of Qingdao, Shandong Province.
The train, produced by CRRC Qingdao Sifang Co., Ltd., is the first permanent magnet straddle-type monorail train independently developed by China.
It officially rolled off the assembly line on May 19, marking a key breakthrough in China’s straddle-type monorail train industry.
As an important urban transportation system, the monorail train features strong climbing capacity, a small turning radius, vast capacity, low noise, energy efficiency and environmentally friendly operation, with a much lower project cost compared with that of subway systems.
The train can connect four, six or eight sections in accordance with operational requirements. The train body is 2.9 meters wide. It is referred to as a Hercules of its kind for carrying 1,448 passengers in six sections with a total length of 90.8 meters. The vehicle’s designed speed is 80 kilometers per hour with a 30-year service life.
Liu Yuwen, deputy director of Sifang’s technology center, said the train driven by permanent magnet synchronous motors is superior in energy conservation. It is estimated that the train requires 10 percent less power than the one using asynchronous motors.
“The permanent magnet synchronous motors feature high power, high efficiency and energy conservation. For example, the train can feed back energy while braking. They help save 10 percent of energy compared with the others,” said Liu.
At present, over 50 straddle-type monorails are being used around the world. Southwest China’s Chongqing Municipality was the first in the country when it opened its 55-km straddle-beam monorail system in June 2005.
